Two children charred to death in Ummulong

Jowai, Nov 21: Two brothers lost their lives on Sunday afternoon after a fire gutted their house at Lumpyrdi, Ummulong in West JaiƱtia Hills while their mother was washing clothes.

On receiving information at around 1 PM, Officer and staff of Ummulong Beat House rushed to the spot for rescuing the children trapped inside the house with an information to Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES), Jowai for rescue an dousing the fire. However, by the time the police and fire services reached the spot, the shed house was completely gutted by fire.

Preliminary enquiry was conducted and learnt that parents of the deceased, Mansoki Challam (mother) and Junom Suna (father), were not present in the house and only children were inside and the house was locked from outside as the mother went to wash the clothes and the father had gone to pick up his wife from the stream.

Some persons show the smoke coming from inside the shed house and went to douse the fire but by that time the shed house was almost completely burned down and they came to know that 2 children were trapped inside only when the parents of the deceased came back from the stream.

The cause of fire is still under inquiry.

The two brothers who lost their lives have been identified as Ambrose Challam (4 years) and Pynshai Challam (2 years).

Inquest and other formalities have been observed by the police and both the dead bodies have been sent to SDM&HO, Jowai Civil Hospital, Ialong for conducting autopsy.
