Two Meghalaya climbers complete ‘Grade A’ courses at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute

Shillong, May 2: Two members of the Meghalaya Sport Climbing & Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA) have successfully completed the Mountaineering courses held at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling. They will be awarded Grade “A”, which is the highest grade given by the Mountaineering Institutes for their fantastic performance.

This training course was held from April 1 – 28, 2025, and sponsored by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.

Balawanhabor Rynjah from Sankardev College won 1st Position in the Sport climbing Competition and as a part of height gaining training Rynjah and the team of 65 trainees from Advance Mountaineering Course reached Camp I of Mt Kabru Dome.

On the other hand, Keliostar Pdai, Battalion Constable of 3rd MLP Battalion along with 71 trainees has climbed Mt. Renok (16,500Ft) during the Basic Mountaineering Course.

The rigorous and transformative courses equipped trainees with essential skills in mountaineering, including physical training, Yoga, rock climbing, ice climbing, jumar climbing, trekking, ice craft, crevasse rescue, map reading, rope techniques and rappelling. This comprehensive training was designed to prepare participants for the challenges of high altitude.
