Shillong, May 5: In a shocking incident on May 3, 2024, two men were lynched to death by a mob in Umthlong village, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya. The deceased, identified as Melar Kurbah (36) and Harmendra Kharkylliang (50) from Umshyrwang village, allegedly attempted to rape a woman in her house around midnight while under the influence of alcohol.
The suspects were apprehended by villagers and detained in the community hall. Despite police arrival at the scene, a crowd of approximately 1,000 people overpowered them and brutally lynched the two men. One died on the spot, while the other succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital.
The alleged rape victim underwent a medical examination, which suggested sexual assault. An FIR has been registered, and police are investigating both the lynching and the attempted rape. Tensions remain high in the village following the incident.
