Guwahati, Jan 23: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court in Guwahati has sentenced two individuals from Assam’s Barpeta district to imprisonment in connection with the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) terror module case.
The court, in its Wednesday ruling, found the accused guilty under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act [UA(P) Act] in case RC-02/2022/NIA/GUW.
Mamunur Rashid has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of ₹1,000, with an additional one month of simple imprisonment in case of default. He has also been sentenced to simple imprisonment for three months under Section 120(B) IPC and RI for the period already served (2 years, 10 months, and 13 days) under Sections 20, 38, and 39 of the UA(P) Act.
Co-accused Mukibul Hussain, alias Makibul Hussain, has received six months of simple imprisonment, a ₹500 fine, and 14 days of simple imprisonment under Section 120(B) IPC. Like Rashid, he has also been sentenced to RI for the period already served (2 years, 8 months, and 13 days) under Sections 20, 38, and 39 of the UA(P) Act.
The case, registered in March 2022, pertained to a Barpeta-based module of the ABT, an affiliate of the banned international terror group Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). The module was reportedly led by Bangladeshi national Saiful Islam, alias Haroon Rashid.
The NIA filed a chargesheet against eight accused in August 2022, followed by a supplementary chargesheet against two others in August 2023. The investigation and trial in the case remain ongoing.
