Tynsong seeks drainage maintenance to prolong life of roads

Must read

Shillong, April 21: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also oversees the Public Works Department (Roads), has reiterated the government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure across Meghalaya. However, he emphasized that the responsibility of maintaining these roads cannot fall solely on the department.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure that proper drainage systems are included in all road construction projects—whether in urban or rural areas—because stagnant water is the biggest threat to road durability,” said Tynsong.

He explained that accumulated water on road surfaces causes rapid deterioration, making it impossible for roads to last long. This, he said, is why drainage infrastructure is given top priority whenever roads are constructed or upgraded.

Tynsong also highlighted a major challenge faced by the department: the public’s tendency to misuse roadside drains.

“Many people assume that rainwater will carry their household waste to the nearest river. This belief is completely wrong,” he said. “Dumping garbage into drains blocks the flow of water and leads to severe waterlogging, especially in city areas.”

Appealing to the public, the Deputy Chief Minister urged residents to act responsibly and avoid throwing garbage into drains or disturbing natural watercourses.

He also issued a warning about encroachments along riverbanks, saying such actions could have serious consequences. “Blocking or narrowing rivers can lead to natural disasters like floods,” he cautioned.

Tynsong concluded by urging citizens to cooperate with the government in preserving both roads and drainage systems, stressing that public participation is key to long-term infrastructure success.
