Shillong, Jan 27: Bengal secured a nine-wicket victory over Meghalaya in their U-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy 2024-25 clash at the Alotgre Ground in Tura on Sunday, marking a historic first for the region as it hosted a BCCI match.

The milestone event highlighted the dedication of the Tura District Cricket Association (TDCA), whose efforts to prepare the pitch, outfield, pavilion, and other facilities were widely praised. The Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) and its president, Nababrata Bhattacharjee, played key roles in making this dream a reality.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma attended the second day of play and expressed his excitement about the occasion.

“This event marks a significant chapter for sports in Garo Hills and paves the way for inspiring future cricketers,” the CM said on social media. “Gratitude to BCCI, CAB (Cricket Association of Bengal) and MCA for their efforts and world-class infrastructure that made this possible. Let us celebrate this milestone and look forward to more matches in the future.”

After being sent in to bat first, Meghalaya were bowled out for 133 in their first innings. Bengal responded with 225, gaining a 92-run lead. In their second innings, Meghalaya managed only 100 runs, leaving Bengal a target of just 9 runs, which they achieved for the loss of one wicket.

In the performers department, Meghalaya’s bowlers stood out, with PM Santhosh (3/32 in 10 overs), Bipin Kr Ray (3/41 in 18), and Manish Sharma (3/76 in 21.4) leading the charge. However, the team struggled with the bat. The hosts were lacking in the batting department but Swastic Chettri showed promise, scoring 48 off 104 balls in the second innings and 26 off 56 in the first.

Meghalaya will conclude their campaign against Vidarbha in Nagpur, starting February 1.
