U Tirot Sing died in ‘house arrest’ as state prisoner, not in jail : Historian Syiemlieh

Shillong, Feb 17: Noted Historian and former Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Chairman, David Syiemlieh said that U Tirot Sing Syiem died under house arrest at Dhaka, while he was serving jail term as held captive by the British raj.

Syiemlieh, extensively researched the life of the Khasi freedom fighter, said that Tirot Sing was placed under house arrest in a rented house by the British. He said referring to his research findings and not in jail. But he was serving jail term at Dhaka.

Referring to a letter to the editor dated 14th of May 1835 in the Friends of India, read at the National Library Kolkata stated that Tirot Sing was provided comfortable living as a state prisoner.

“Tirot Sing Syiem did not die in jail. He passed away while living in a bungalow under comfortable conditions as a state prisoner”, he added.
