Shillong, May 13: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has won the Sohiong Assembly seat, the result of which were announced on Saturday.
UDP candidate Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah was comfortably ahead at the end of round 6 of counting with a margin of 3422 votes including postal ballot votes. He had polled 16679 votes, with NPP’s Samlin Malngiang and the second spot with 12475 votes.
At distant third position was Congress candidate S. Osborne Kharjana with 1716 votes.
A total of 34,783 voters were eligible for casting vote in the May 10 election for Sohiong constituency. However, the constituency had polled 91.87%, meaning around 31,955 people had cast their vote.
Till 11 AM, 6 rounds of counting had been completed and a total of 30,433 votes checked.
Despite one more round to go for counting, it was evident that UDP’s Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah had won the contest for the Sohiong seat.
Election in Sohiong was adjourned after the sudden demise of former home minister and candidate of UDP, HDR Lyngdoh, on February 20.
Soon after the declaration of the 6th round of counting, family members of Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah began celebration.
With this win, UDP’s tally in the state assembly had increased to 12 seats.
