Umiam bridge to undergo retrofitting; bridge likely to remain close in second week of February

Shillong, Jan 29: Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal said that the movement of vehicles through the Umiam bridge will fully stop on the day it is lifted to replace the bearing.

He informed that the entire Umiam Bridge will be lifted as a part of the ongoing process to replace the bearings, which is anticipated to happen in the second week of February.

During the replacement of bearings at the bridge, the movement of vehicles will be restricted for a few days when the work will be carried out and only emergency vehicles including Ambulance Service and light vehicles will be allowed to pass through during the retrofitting process is underway.

“Before the replacement process, there will be a wide publicity in the media so the general public will be well informed, displays will be put up wherever necessary to inform the general public about the date and hours of the exercise”, said Mondal.

The Minister urged commuters to take an alternate route during the Bridge rebuilding day.

Furthermore, Mondal informed that the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is looking into the possibility of identifying a new alignment, for construction of an alternative route to avoid using the bridge.

“I had a meeting with them (NHIDCL) also, they are trying to locate an alternative route for the bridge,” he said.

He also said the Geological Survey of India (GSI) did not allow the proposals for construction of a new route either upstream or downstream of the dam.

In regards to an old bridge near the Umiam bridge, the Minister said that the bridge has been abandoned for quite a long time and many onlookers or the people there, had informed him that it is not motorable.
