Shillong, April 2: The Hynniewtrep Youth Development Council (HYDC) on Wednesday requested the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to find out ways and means to address the problem of unemployment faced by the local youth in the region.
In a letter to the KHADC chief S Rynjah, HYDC president Wyraiwan Sohtun said, “(We request you to find) ways and means to generate employment opportunities for local youth, leveraging the council’s resources and partnerships with various stakeholders.”
He also suggested that the council should direct all businesses operating within the Sixth Schedule area to reserve at least 70% of their job openings for local youth, ensuring that the community benefits from the economic activities taking place within the council’s territory, ensure that all businesses operating within the Sixth Schedule area adhere to the minimum wage prescribed by the government of Meghalaya in 2024, safeguarding the rights and interests of local workforce and allocate funds and devise schemes to encourage and support local youth in becoming entrepreneurs, providing them with the necessary resources, training, and mentorship to establish and sustain their own businesses.
“I believe that these initiatives will go a long way in addressing the unemployment challenges faced by our local youth, promoting economic growth, and fostering a more prosperous and self-reliant community,” Sohtun said.
He informed that the CEM has assured the delegation that his EC will look into the issue.
