New Delhi, July 7: After much anticipation, 43 leaders were on Wednesday evening inducted as Union Ministers as part of the reshuffle of the Union Cabinet by PM Narendra Modi. The names of the new ministers were announced just before of the oath-taking ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
Among the 43 MPs, 4 faces are from the North East region, namely, Kiren Rijiju (Arunachal Pradesh), Sarbananda Sonowal (Assam), Dr. R.K Ranjan Singh (Manipur), and Pratima Bhowmik (Tripura). The new faces each represent a state ruled by BJP in the region.
Among the 43 leaders, 7 Minister of States (MoS) have been elevated to Union Ministers while 36 new Ministers have been inducted.
With the inclusion of 43 new members, the Council of Ministers has swelled to 77 members from the earlier number of 58. According to the Constitution of India, the total number of ministers in the Council of Ministers must not exceed 15% of the total number of members of the Lok Sabha.
Just before the oath taking ceremony, atleast 13 Ministers resigned including big names like – Dr Harsh Vardhan, Prakash Javadekar, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Ramesh Pokhriyal among others.
Meanwhile, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Thawarchand Gehlot resigned following his elevation to the post of Governor of Karnataka on Tuesday. The BJP-led NDA government had on Tuesday announced Governors to eight states.
