Dibrugarh, Feb 16: Union Minister of Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi visited Dibrugarh on Sunday to review women and child welfare initiatives in the district. Addressing a press conference at the Circuit House, she emphasized India’s progress in women’s economic empowerment, citing an increase in women’s labour force participation from 23.3% in 2017-18 to 41.7% in 2023-24.
She applauded Assam’s efforts in preventing child marriage, enhancing maternal and child healthcare, and promoting women’s entrepreneurship. She highlighted key government programs like Mission Poshan 2.0 and the Stand-Up India Scheme, which has raised the loan ceiling for first-time women entrepreneurs to ₹2 crore.
Discussing infrastructure development, she noted that since 2024, 11,824 km of new railway tracks have been built in the Northeast. The Railway Budget has increased fivefold, from ₹2,122 crore (2009-14) to ₹10,440 crore (2025-26). She also mentioned AIIMS Guwahati and industrial projects boosting healthcare and job opportunities.
Annapurna Devi reiterated the government’s commitment to women-led development, with ₹25,000 crore allocated for working women hostels and improved sanitation through 12 crore new toilets and tap connections. She expressed confidence in Assam’s continued growth through strong policies and public support.
