Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat addresses tourism challenges and prospects in Northeast

Must read

Shillong, Sept 3: Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, chaired a Tourism Ministers’ conference in Shillong on Monday, which saw participation from Tourism Ministers of North Eastern, Eastern States, and Union Territories.

Speaking to the media after the conference, Shekhawat acknowledged that connectivity remains a significant challenge across many states. He noted, “Connectivity is one of the challenges in most states. Apart from connectivity, many states have highlighted issues such as the development of homestays and marketing strategies. We have documented all observations, as most challenges faced by North Eastern states are similar, though some are unique. We will work on finding appropriate solutions.”

Regarding special packages for the Northeast, Shekhawat mentioned, “With the recommendation of the 14th Finance Commission, all Northeastern and hilly states receive substantial funding. These states are granted 90% of the funds from the Government of India for development projects, including tourism. This level of support will continue in future tourism infrastructure plans.”

When asked about the impact of the violence after one year in Manipur on tourist inflow, Shekhawat responded, “Based on presentations from all states except Manipur, it is evident that tourist footfall has increased over the past year or post-COVID. Holistically, India remains the top destination among South Asia-Pacific countries. Therefore, there has been no overall reduction in tourism influx.”

On whether the Inner Line Permit (ILP) poses a hurdle to tourism development, Shekhawat said, “Some states have flagged this issue. We are committed to resolving it and will take steps to find appropriate solutions.”

Regarding special tourism packages for the Northeastern region, he clarified, “Government schemes are not region-specific but national. However, Northeastern and Himalayan states receive special incentives, with a 90% grant, compared to 50% for other states.”

When asked about which Northeast state is best for tourism, Shekhawat responded, “Each state has its strengths. All states provided excellent presentations, and I admire their efforts and preparedness.”

Addressing safety concerns due to the region’s international borders, he assured, “The safety of tourists is not compromised by the borders. The Northeastern region is among the safest places to travel. Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, we are formulating a new scheme for border area tourism, with the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Home Affairs involved. States and stakeholders are requested to submit proposals for their areas.”

He added, “Tourism today encompasses various dimensions: nature-based, cultural, agro-based, wildlife, cuisine, and adventure tourism. It includes all aspects of hospitality.”

Regarding the law and order situation in Shillong, Meghalaya, Shekhawat said, “In general, law and order are conducive to tourism. Except for the ongoing turbulence in Manipur, other states have excellent law and order. Tourists have had positive experiences in the Northeast and are eager to return.”

In response to a recent U.S. travel advisory cautioning against travel to Manipur and Meghalaya, Shekhawat stated, “I prefer not to comment on specific advisories. However, the Northeast is safe for travel. Many solo travellers, including solo female travellers, have shared positive experiences and safety assurances through their comments and videos.”
