Shillong, Sept 3: Meghalaya on Monday hosted a Tourism Ministers’ Conference for North Eastern and Eastern states, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The event, chaired by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, focused on collaborative strategies to boost tourism across these regions.
Shekhawat lauded the competitive spirit of the states, noting, “Every state has set ambitious targets. The enthusiasm is palpable, making this one of the best meetings I’ve attended.”
Paul Lyngdoh, Meghalaya’s Tourism Minister, highlighted the state’s natural treasures, including the UNESCO-recognized Mawmluh cave, while emphasizing that “the true essence of Meghalaya lies in the warmth and hospitality of our people.” He stressed the importance of sustainable tourism, addressing challenges like heavy tourist footfall, limited infrastructure, and the need for better connectivity.
Lyngdoh shared that tourism in Meghalaya directly employs over 50,000 residents, with Rs 465 crores invested in the sector over the last three years. He expressed optimism about the state’s potential, citing a pre-pandemic growth rate of 7.34% and predicting a significant surge in the coming years.
Key initiatives like the Community-Led Tourism Infrastructure Development Scheme and the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP) were highlighted as driving forces behind the state’s tourism growth. The MGMP, in particular, was praised for fostering a creative economy and showcasing Meghalaya’s unique cultural heritage.
The conference featured interactive sessions where ministers from the participating states presented their tourism strengths, from adventure to spirituality, while seeking Shekhawat’s support in overcoming various challenges. The Union Minister responded with assurances of backing and collaborative efforts.
The event highlights the importance of interstate collaboration in creating a vibrant and dynamic tourism sector. Dignitaries in attendance included Union Minister Suresh Gopi, senior tourism officials, and ministers from the participating regions.
