Dibrugarh, July 21: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal has directed Indian Army officials and the district administration officials of Dibrugarh to ensure prompt availability of all emergency services to assist the affected population in the district.
The persistent heavy rains have exacerbated the risk of diseases like malaria and dengue in the flood-hit areas. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Dao Division took the initiative to deliver essential medical aid to the villagers. The specially equipped camp features advanced laboratory and X-ray facilities and hosts a team of specialist doctors and surgeons who screened nearly 1,500 villagers for symptoms of dengue and malaria.
Sonowal visited the Comprehensive Medical Camp at the Dinjan Army camp on Saturday. Organized by the Indian Army, the camp is part of the ‘Rajat Jayanti’ celebrations of Kargil Vijay Diwas and aims to provide critical medical assistance to the local population affected by incessant rains and floods along the banks of the Brahmaputra River.
The medical team at the camp comprises gynaecologists, orthopaedic surgeons, general physicians, and eye specialists, who also conduct screenings for malnutrition among children. In addition to medical screenings, an awareness lecture on lifestyle diseases was conducted to educate the villagers on maintaining their health amid the crisis.
Union Minister Sonowal expressed his appreciation for the Army’s efforts, acknowledging their critical role in providing much-needed medical services to the flood-affected people. “In times of natural calamities, our strength lies in unity and swift action,” Sonowal stated, emphasizing the necessity for coordinated efforts in addressing the disaster.
The meeting was attended by the District Commissioner of Dibrugarh, Bikram Kairi, MLA Terash Gowala, MLA Binod Hazarika, and Major General Vikrant Deshpande, GOC-in-C of Dao Division, along with other senior officials from the Indian Army and the state government.
“The proactive efforts of the Indian Army in assisting the local populace amidst the flood crisis are commendable,” Sonowal remarked. He reassured the villagers that the government is fully committed to their well-being and will continue to provide support in these challenging times.
