Update | Sikkim flash floods: Govt provides details of devastation in four districts

Gangtok, Oct 4: A cloudburst-induced flash floods has wreaked havoc across four districts of Sikkim. The state Disaster Control Room at SSDMA has compiled the following report on the damages incurred:

Mangan District
– 16 individuals have been reported missing
– Relief efforts are underway, with 70 families finding refuge at designated camps in Chandey, Chungthang, and Naga.
– Approximately 10,000 people have been directly impacted by the force of the water surge.

Gangtok District
– Singtam bears the weight of two casualties
– Additionally, 15 individuals remain unaccounted for.
– The flood has disrupted the lives of around 200 families, leaving them grappling with the aftermath.
– Swift response efforts have led to the evacuation of 1025 individuals
– A refuge for senior citizens from Singtam has been established at the Sneha Kinetic Guest House, providing shelter to 25 individuals. Another relief camp has been set up at Serwani Army Camp.

Namchi District
– In Namchi, the NHPC Primary School in Balwatar has been converted into a crucial relief point, overseen by SDM Namchi.
– A strategic relocation of the relief camp from Adarsh Gaon’s private residence to Devi Mandir, Adarsh Gaon, ensures more accessible aid for those affected.
– Further relief camps have been established at various locations including Linkutaar’s NHPC Primary School, Rekep Government Primary School in Lower Chalamthang, and Government Junior High School Mangaley.
– SDM Jorethang supervises a relief camp set up at Melli Government Senior Secondary School

Pakyong District
– The aftermath of the water surge has left a stark trail of destruction, with 150 pucca houses and 127 kutcha houses in disrepair.
– In a bid to ensure the safety of the affected, 56 individuals have been successfully evacuated.
