Shillong, Oct 4: The Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Monday congratulated Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang for becoming the first indigenous woman Chief Secretary of Meghalaya.
Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the improvement cum widening of the NH 40 between Shillong and Dawki here in Shillong, Naidu said her achievement will be an inspiration for the youth of Meghalaya to take up government service as a career choice.
On September 30, 2021, Suchiang became the first indigenous woman (Khasi-Jaintia) and only the second woman overall to occupy the post of Chief Secretary of Meghalaya. PP Trivedi was the first female Chief Secretary of the state, occupying the top bureaucratic post in the late 80s.
Suchiang took charge of the office of Chief Secretary from MS Rao, who retired from the post on September 30, 2021.
On assuming the post, she had stated that she has always worked hard and will continue to work hard, and that after becoming a Chief Secretary it is not that she will go slow. She also intends to push the officers to do even better.
