Village chief threatens agitation if NH-6 not repaired with 15 days

SHILLONG, FEB 15: A delegation of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of headmen from East Jaintia Hills on Thursday sought the intervention of the deputy chief minister incharge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong for immediate repairing of the dilapidated National Highway-6 particularly from Lumshnong to Malidor.

Secretary of the JAC and headman of Pyrtakuna Love You Bareh said the deputy chief minister has informed the delegation that the work orders have been issued for proper rehabilitation of the road and the work would commence immediately.

He however said that the JAC would be compelled to resort to agitational programmes if repairing of the road does not start within 15 days.

Bareh also informed that the JAC has also taken up with the deputy CM the issue relating to the illegal crossing over of Bangladeshi nationals into Meghalaya and urged that the BSF should secure the border for the safety and security of the local populace.

“We have also taken up the need for immediate upgradation of the Umkiang PHC to a CHC to which the deputy CM has assured his intervention,” Bareh said. He said that the deputy CM also informed that work for the land custom station (LCS) at Narpuh Elaka has gained much progress following the approval given by the Centre.

“We are hopeful that the work will start soon to alleviate and stop the problem faced by the people daily,” he added.
