Villagers torch Assam Rifles vehicles, firearms after civilian’s death in Manipur

Imphal, June 5: An Assam Rifles (AR) Major reportedly shot dead a villager in Kangpokpi district in Manipur triggering the angry villagers to burn down two Assam Rifles vehicles, two AK 47 rifles and ransacking the force’s camps and furniture, police said on Saturday.

Police said that an Assam Rifles Major accompanied by four jawans in civil uniform raided the house of one Mangboilal Lhouvum, 36, at Chalwa village under the Kangpokpi police station on Friday night and dragged him out from the house before shot him dead.

The villagers immediately shifted the man to a nearby hospital but the doctors declared him brought dead.

The victim is a daily wage labourer and father of two children.

The police have registered a case after taking the Assam Rifles Major in their custody and begun a probe. The mob also tried to attack the accused Assam Rifles Major while he was being taken away by the police.

It was not immediately known what led to the incident. The police and the Assam Rifles refused to share any details of the incident.
