Nongpoh, Nov 4: Local leaders from various villages in Ri Bhoi District under the umbrella of the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong on Monday met the Deputy Commissioner to express strong opposition to the plan by the power department to install Smart Metres in rural areas.
The meeting with Abhilash Baranwal, the Deputy Commissioner, was led by BB Makdoh, the chairman of the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong, along with other village leaders.
Makdoh stated that the Synjuk does not support the installation of these Smart Metres for electricity billing without public consultation and clear communication.
He mentioned that the Synjuk has no information about the installation process and was surprised that committees responsible for deploying these metres entered homes to connect these metres that led to financial stress due to the high rates of the electricity usage.
“Why is the electricity department focusing on installing these metres instead of taking the initiative to replace and renew old and damaged electric poles which are unsafe for the public,” Makdoh asked.
Makdoh also sought the cooperation of other village representatives of the district to join hands in opposing this move of the power department and also sought the Deputy Commissioner’s help to take up the matter at the earliest with the power department.
The Deputy Commissioner assured to take their concerns seriously and to discuss the matter with the higher ups of the power department.
