Shillong, Oct 28: Following the wide scale violence by the members taking part in the FKJGP-sponsored rally against the unemployment in State on Friday afternoon, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo has issued show cause notice to FKJGP for violating the conditions of the rally held in Shillong city.

Several passer-by and non-tribals were brutally attacked by masked men wearing FKJGP scarfs who were part of the unemployment protest. Widely circulated videos of the assaults showed the masked men arbitrarily and mercilessly pounding men on the road in several parts of the city – be it pedestrians, two wheel riders, three wheel auto drivers and passengers and four wheeler occupants, even using sticks with majorly targeting non-tribals.

Two journalists were also assaulted by the unruly mob.

Similarly, several shops were vandalised.

Uneasy calm prevailed in the commercial hub of the city like Police Bazar and nearby shops following the incidents.

Tynsong condemns the violence

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister was quick to condemn the incident and said that they have already instructed the police to take necessary action.

“Police are on the job and we have instructed the SP to ensure that there is no untoward incident. We will have to wait for the updates from the police for the next course of action,” stated Tynsong.

Sending out a message to the leaders of FKJGP and other NGOs, Tynsong said that they are free to have a peace rally but it shouldn’t lead to a law and order situation. “I request FKJGP leaders or any NGO leaders, have your meetings but please remember to control your members because we don’t want any law and order situation in the state,” said Tynsong.

Suo moto cases

Meanwhile, two suo moto cases are being taken up at Laitumkhrah PS and Sadar PS for which legal action will be taken on the physical assaults and vandalism on pedestrians and commuters.
