Violence in Manipur’s Moreh: Militant attacks, tragic loss of two Police personnel, and arson incidents unfold

Imphal, Jan 17: The situation in Moreh, Manipur remains tense after militants launched multiple gun and bomb attacks on policemen. A face-off between locals and central forces ensued following the tragic death of two Manipur police personnel on duty on Wednesday.

Subsequent attacks targeted security forces at Ward No. 7 and Chikim village, near the town’s border with Myanmar. In an ambush near Ima Kondong Lairembi Devi temple, 32-year-old Wangkhem Somorjit, a Manipur Police personnel, sustained fatal gunshot wounds.He succumbed to his injuries at the Key Location Point (KLP) of Assam Rifles.

Two additional IRB personnel were injured in the exchange of fire.

Schools damaged, fire tender from Myanmar

Multiple residences and two schools in Moreh suffered damage in a series of arson incidents. To combat the fires, a fire tender from Myanmar has been brought in for extinguishing efforts.

High-level meeting

A high-level meeting was convened at the CM’s secretariat to address the escalating situation, attended by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, ministers, and MLAs, as per an official statement. Moreh has witnessed frequent exchanges of fire between security forces and militants in recent days.

The latest incident occurred merely 48 hours after the state forces arrested two suspects linked to the killing of a police officer. Earlier this month, Chief Minister Singh had expressed concerns about the potential involvement of foreign mercenaries from Myanmar in the ongoing gun and bomb attacks.
