Nongpoh, Nov 14: The bridge of Dwarksuid village, located along the Shillong By-Pass road, has become weaker following the mud flow recently along the connecting rails of the bridge, which has made commuting through the bridge risky for the villagers.
This mud flow near the bridge occurred on Saturday, despite being a very sunny day.
As per videos circulating on social media, part of the retaining wall of the bridge was seen collapsing, especially after heavy trucks were passing over it.
The current perilous condition of the bridge can be traced back to the previous year, whereby Government of Meghalaya had banned the movement of big vehicles over the bridge and the Shillong By-Pass road after the foundation of the bridge started developing cracks.
The government has strictly banned the movement of trucks carrying loads of more than 10 tonnes over the bridge. The government has also built a temporary Bailey Bridge, however, this bridge is also not being used for travelling because of its poor structure.
Villagers using this bridge to carry out their daily works have complained about the weakening of the bridge which has put them as risk. They further stated that if the government does not hasten the reconstruction of this bridge and does not stop heavy vehicles from passing through the bridge, the bridge will collapse sooner than expected.
