Shillong, Feb 28: First time Voice of the People Party (VPP) MDC from Lyngkyrdem-Laitkroh Shemborlang Rynjah on Friday elected unopposed as the new chief executive member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) even as he announced the new executive committee (EC)’s decision not to issue fresh trading license, to come up with a job recruitment policy and a poor-people friendly building byelaws besides pushing for inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India.
Also, the first time MDC from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah Strong Pillar Kharjana was elected as the new Chairman.
After taking over as chairman, Kharjana presided over the election to the post of CEM and declared that Rynjah has been elected unopposed as the new KHADC chief since opposition has not fielded any candidate.
The new CEM was felicitated by the party MDCs.
Addressing the House, Rynjah said, “I thank the party especially the president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit for seeing me fit to be the candidate of the party and for having faith and confidence in me to take the responsibility of leading the KHADC as the CEM.”
“I also extended my heartfelt thanks to the people of Langkyrdem-Laikroh constituency for electing me as their MDC. I pray that God give me the wisdom to fulfil my duties with all humility and responsibility,” he said.
The new KHADC chief also assured to fulfil the party’s promise to provide clean governance and said, “I am just a new face but I am ready to accept suggestions or even criticisms. My door is open for all. Please feel free to enter anytime.”
“I also assure to serve the council without being partial to anyone,” he added.
The new CEM also sought the support and cooperation of the opposition bench and said, “I also request you to play a constructive role.”
Spelling out his priorities, Rynjah told reporters that the new EC would immediate take steps to streamline the functioning of the district council.
“We have also decided not to issue fresh trading license particularly on traded, which are being carried out by local Khasi people,” he said while also assuring to review the building byelaws so that it should not harass the poor people.
“We will ensure the building byelaws is people friendly especially for the poor people.”
He said the new EC will also come up with a job recruitment policy that will benefit the youth of the state.

Further, the newly elected CEM said that the issue of Khasi language is one of the issues in the party’s manifesto. “So hand in hand we will discuss with the Khasi Authors Society and other organizations on how to pursue this issue so that it gets recognition in the Eighth Schedule,” he added.
On the VPP’s stand in regards to railway projects, Rynjah however said, “We will sit as an EC and we will study on what is the current issue about the railways. We will also take legal status that any proposal that comes to areas under the jurisdiction of the KHADC, we will study and ensure our people are benefitted and we should have security so that others do not exploit us.”
In regards to the border issue, the CEM said, “I have to call first the EC and consult with the officers on what is the role of the KHADC and we have to study that so that we will see that the border people are safeguarded in terms of land. We know the district council has a role to play about this border issue. We have to study and research.”
The VPP has formed a new executive committee with only eight members including the CEM in order to reduce expenditures of the council.
The MDCs inducted as Executive Members (EMs) are Mawthadraishan MDC, Powell Sohkhlet, Nongthymmai MDC, Winston Tony Lyngdoh, Mawkyrwat MDC, Pynkhraw Kharjahrin, Mawkynrew MDC, Seiborlang Warbah, Umroi MDC, Isnei Hinge, Mylliem MDC, Aibandaplin L. Nonglait, and Laitumkhrah-Malki MDC, Deiti Majaw.
Meanwhile, the VPP has also decided to field Mawhati MDC, Kynjohlang Rangtong as the contender for the post of Deputy Chairman.
