Shillong, Sept 29: The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Friday condemned the decision of the Government of India to organize the cleaning drive on a Sunday and appealed to every Christian to boycott the programme.
“This decision of the Government is a direct attempt to dishonour the sentiments of the followers of Christian faith in the Country,” VPP general secretary Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon said in a statement.
“The Party therefore, appeals to every Christian in the state to boycott the programme and refrain from participating in the cleaning drive activities on the mentioned day,” he added.
According to him, as per tradition, the cleaning drive should be organized on the 2nd of October every year as part of honouring the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation.
