War Hero Subedar Deepak Lama, Veteran of Three Wars, Passes Away at 94

Subedar Deepak Lama, a revered war veteran, took his last breath on October 25, 2024, at the age of 94 at his residence at Kharsang in Arunachal Pradesh. Known for his exemplary bravery and dedication, Subedar Lama served the nation in three major wars, leaving an indelible mark on India’s military history.

Born in 1933 in a small village in Darjeeling, Lama joined the Indian Army at just 16 in 1949, serving with the 8th Battalion, The Gorkha Rifles. Over a career that spanned decades, Lama participated in the 1962 Sino-Indian War, the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, and the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, displaying remarkable courage on each front.

During the 1962 war, Lama manned a Light Machine Gun on the Eastern Front of Ladakh for four consecutive days, inflicting significant casualties on the Chinese forces. His service was interrupted when he was captured and held as a Prisoner of War (POW) for four months, during which he was listed as missing and presumed dead. His eventual release was celebrated as a miracle and a testament to his resilience.

In the 1965 conflict with Pakistan, Lama and his unit played a pivotal role in the capture of Lahore, showcasing the tactical prowess and dedication of the Gorkha Regiment. Six years later, during the 1971 war, he again served on the frontlines in the Chittagong Sector, further solidifying his reputation as a stalwart soldier.

After retiring from active service, Lama remained engaged in community work serving as a leader in the local labor union. His contributions to society continued to inspire those around him, as he championed causes for veterans and the welfare of his fellow citizens.

Subedar Lama is remembered today not only as a veteran of India’s wars but as a symbol of the resilience and dedication embodied by the Indian Armed Forces.
