Shillong, April 10: Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday announced that Shillong’s iconic Ward’s Lake will soon be officially retransferred to the Tourism Department, paving way for a major revamp.
The Ward’s Lake is currently with the Forest and Environment department.

Speaking to the media, Lyngdoh said the decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. He informed that Rs 18 crore has been earmarked for the first phase of redeveloping the lake.

“The government intends to introduce several new facilities, including entertainment zones, a leisure area, cafes, and the major highlight — a light show and musical fountain,” Lyngdoh informed.

As part of the upgrade, the lake will also remain open to visitors till 10 PM. He added that the approach road to the lake will be expanded to accommodate the expected increase in tourist footfall, which is projected to double following the redevelopment.
