Watershed Yatra reaches Ganchikalak Secondary School in Chokpot

Tura, March 26:  The Watershed Yatra, a nationwide campaign advocating sustainable watershed management, made a significant stop at Ganchikalak Secondary School, South Garo Hills engaging students and local stakeholders in a series of awareness-driven activities.

The event commenced with an inaugural ceremony graced by  Sengchim N Sangma, MLA of Chokpot and MDC of Chokpot GHADC, as the Chief Guest. He was joined by Former MDC Willy D Shira, Wennison Ch Marak, Pittingson R Marak, ADC South Garo Hills and SDO of Chokpot Civil Sub-Division, Dr. Merril N Sangma, President of the Garo Hills Environment Protection Society (GHEPS), K C Momin, Advisor of GHEPS, and John Oswin S Momin, Divisional Soil & Water Conservation Officer, Baghmara, South Garo Hills. The event also witnessed the participation of Nokmas, Sordars, teachers and schoolchildren.

As part of the campaign, interactive sessions were held, educating students and faculty on the significance of watershed conservation and sustainable practices. A short skit was performed, highlighting the role of watershed management in sustainable livelihood development and natural resource conservation. Additionally, essay, drawing, and painting competitions on “The Importance of Natural Resource Management” allowed students to express their understanding of environmental preservation.

A tree plantation drive was also conducted, with dignitaries, students, and staff planting saplings to reinforce the commitment to environmental conservation.

Speaking at the event, Chief Guest Sengchim N Sangma emphasized the importance of youth involvement in ecological sustainability. “The Watershed Yatra aims to inspire a sense of responsibility among our youth towards preserving our natural resources,” he said.

Adding to the awareness efforts, a display van showcasing audiovisual content on watershed programs was stationed at the venue. The van, which has been traveling across the country, is currently in Meghalaya as part of its mission to spread awareness on sustainable watershed management.
