Shillong, Jan 17: A blend of timeless artistry and cutting-edge innovation awaits as traditional silks like Eri and Muga meet revolutionary fibres such as hemp, sisal, and bamboo.

The National Symposium on “Threads of Heritage: Exploring Traditional Textiles and Natural Fibres” will take place from January 27–29, 2025, at the College of Post-Graduate Studies in Agricultural Sciences, Umiam, Meghalaya. Organized by the College of Community Science, CAU (Imphal), Tura, this three-day event promises to reveal how the legacies of the past can inspire a sustainable future.

The symposium will be a confluence of India’s rich textile traditions and emerging innovations in natural fibres. Through expert talks, live demonstrations, cultural exhibitions, and networking opportunities, participants will discover transformative ideas for textiles and eco-friendly industries.

Focus on Northeast India’s Unique Fibre Resources

A highlight of the event is its focus on the Northeast’s unique natural fibres, including banana pseudostem, pineapple leaf, bamboo, jute, ramie, and sisal. These fibres, alongside heritage textiles like Eri and Muga silks, will be showcased for their immense potential in sustainable fashion, eco-friendly packaging, and industrial applications.

Dr. Jyoti Vastrad, Dean of the College, emphasized the economic and cultural significance of these resources. “India’s traditional textiles and indigenous fibre industries not only preserve cultural heritage but also drive sustainability and economic growth. This symposium will unite experts, researchers, and entrepreneurs to promote innovation in this vital sector,” she said.
