West Garo Hills rings in green New Year: Bans noisy firecrackers, promotes eco-friendly festivities with safety focus

Tura, Dec 28: In a proactive move to combat air pollution and promote environmental sustainability, the West Garo Hills District has issued comprehensive instructions applicable throughout the district for New Year celebrations.

In an effort to promote a tranquil and secure atmosphere for New Year’s Eve celebrations, authorities in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya have instituted a ban on highly explosive firecrackers known for their thunderous bursts. Prohibited items include Chinese crackers, muttoons, garland crackers, bottle bombs, double-sounded bombs, rocket bombs, parachute bombs, and more.

1. Permitted Firecrackers:

Only environmentally friendly options, such as green fireworks/crackers, Tarabati, Chilli, and Tubn, are sanctioned for sale and display in firecracker shops during the New Year celebration. This measure aims to reduce the ecological impact of the festivities.

2. Authorised Sellers:

Only shops that have obtained explicit permission from the District Administration are authorised to sell firecrackers. Furthermore, sales are limited to the approved environmentally friendly options mentioned in point 1 within the jurisdiction of West Garo Hills district.

3. Compliance with Supreme Court’s Directive:

All sellers, buyers, and users of firecrackers are required to adhere to the directives set by the Supreme Court, as per the Explosive Rules of 2008. This ensures strict compliance with safety standards and regulatory measures.

4. Sale Time Restrictions:

The sale of firecrackers is strictly prohibited between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. This time restriction is implemented to foster a serene and undisturbed environment during nighttime hours.

To ensure a safe and responsible environment during the sale of firecrackers, the following guidelines must be strictly adhered to:

Safety Guidelines for Firecracker Sales:

  • Sale counters must be elevated above ground level, using wooden tables or planks.
  • Firecrackers must be shielded by barricades to prevent access, especially by children.
  • Stalls’ roofs and walls should be constructed from non-inflammable materials.
  • Naked flames, such as burning candles or lanterns, are strictly prohibited.
  • Strict adherence to fire safety measures is required.
  • Firecrackers should not be sold to minors without adult accompaniment.
  • Prohibition of firecracker sales near hazardous areas, such as petrol pumps, explosive go-downs, LPG gas depots, etc.
