Jowai, April 13: The District Administration of West Jaiñtia Hills halted the construction of a road in Block 1 area on Wednesday after it received a complaint that a road was being constructed by Assam Government without proper authorization despite the area being inside the territory of Meghalaya.
A team of districts officials led by Executive Magistrate WK Kharbuki, and comprising of DSP AJ Sangma and Laskein BDO B Niang and the police personnel, conducted an inspection of the construction site at Riat Kyn-o and Iurim Biam near the border of Khatkasla and Psiar village under the West Jaiñtia Hills district.
During the inspection, the West Jaiñtia Hills team observed that the construction of the road was being carried out by labourers using earth movers. The road is being constructed from Umkhyrmi Village under Block 1 towards Khatkasla and Psiar village of West Jaiñtia Hills.
According to Kharbuki, the contractor responsible for the construction is a Khasi person from Meghalaya who claimed that the road’s construction is funded by the Central Government and implemented by the Assam Government.
Kharbuki immediately halted the construction of the road and directed the labourers to resume work only after obtaining clearance from the Meghalaya Government.
