West Jaintia Hills hosts ‘Buyer-Seller Meet’ to promote local farmers’ products

Jowai, Dec 5: A three-day ‘Buyer-Seller Meet’ began in Jowai in West Jaintia Hills on Thursday. The event features a diverse range of exhibits, including organic vegetables, fresh fruits, processed food items, spices, local crafts, and handmade goods.

Approximately 120 stalls have been installed, including career guidance and overseas employment information booths. A food court offering regional specialties is also set up to attract visitors.

The 3-day event has been organized by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills, in collaboration with several district line departments, at Jrisalein Playground, Chuwakhu, Jowai, which will conclude on December 7.

The event was inaugurated by local MLA and Chairman of MUDA, Wailadmiki Shylla, who served as the chief guest.

In his inaugural address, Shylla emphasized that the initiative is designed to promote local farmers’ products and provide a platform for job-seeking youth to explore opportunities for skill development and entrepreneurship. He encouraged farmers to engage actively, exchange innovative ideas, and foster a welcoming and friendly atmosphere for visitors at the stalls. Additionally, Shylla urged the youth to leverage government schemes to establish their own businesses, highlighting the job creation potential of these initiatives when utilized effectively.

West Jaintia Hills’ Deputy Commissioner, B.S. Sohliya, reiterated that the meet aims to facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration among farmers across the district and state. He expressed optimism that the event would empower farmers to enhance their production capacities and gain valuable insights. Sohliya also urged attendees to adopt environmentally friendly practices by using biodegradable bags instead of plastic.

Additional Deputy Commissioner and Project Director of DRDA Jowai, F.B. Basan, highlighted the event’s significance for farmers and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). He noted that the platform allows participants to showcase their products, tools, and services while fostering idea-sharing and mutual learning. Basan also pointed out the inclusion of cultural programs such as musical performances, traditional dances, and a fashion show to celebrate local heritage and creativity.

To recognize and support skill development, certificates and toolkits were distributed to trainees who had completed various trade training programs under the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS).
