Shillong, April 8: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday hailed this year’s MBOSE SSLC results as a major milestone in Meghalaya’s education journey, calling it one of the most fulfilling moments of his tenure.

While choosing not to comment on criticism over the improved results and the use of CM Impact guidebooks, Sangma reaffirmed his government’s commitment to long-term, meaningful reforms in the education sector, especially in rural areas.

“The results have been something I have been very, very concerned about for a long time,” the Chief Minister said while mentioning that the government’s focus has been on addressing deep-rooted challenges from the foundational levels of schooling. Key interventions have included intensive teacher training and special academic support in districts that have historically struggled.

On the CM Impact guidebooks, which have drawn both praise and scrutiny, Sangma strongly defended the initiative. “We used a tried and tested method from competitive exams like the civil services, IIT, IIM, NEET, and GMAT. The idea was to help students become familiar with the question formats and boost their confidence,” he explained.

Describing the SSLC outcome as deeply personal, Sangma said, “I told my wife and friends – this is one of the most fulfilling things I’ve witnessed in the past seven to eight years. Imagine a Class 10 student failing — it can crush their dreams. It used to really bother me.”

To critics, he had a firm yet compassionate message, “I have no comments on what people want to say negatively. I look at it from the child’s perspective, and I’m happy we’ve made a difference.”

Clarifying that the guidebooks were simply a tool to aid preparation and not a shortcut to success, he said, “This booklet is not going to make them IAS officers. They have to work hard. Even with the booklets, learning only comes with effort.”

The Chief Minister also congratulated all successful students and offered words of encouragement to those who didn’t clear the exams. “This is not the end. Keep working hard,” he urged.

Acknowledging the growing aspiration among students to pursue higher education, Sangma said the government is actively working to expand capacity at the higher secondary level. Discussions are already underway with government, private, and aided schools to introduce more streams and increase intake.

He also encouraged students to stay flexible during admissions. “We all want to be in top institutes, but there won’t be space for everyone. Be practical. Apply to multiple institutions — don’t give up on your education,” he advised.

Chief Minister further assured that “this is just the beginning. We will continue to strive for even better outcomes in the years ahead.”
