Shillong, March 30: For a while, ChatGPT was out of service as millions of users were trying to generate Ghibli-style images, overwhelming the system and causing a temporary outage.
What exactly are these Ghibli-style images?
Inspired by the legendary Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli, these images capture a dreamy, hand-drawn aesthetic filled with soft colors, detailed backgrounds, and a warm, nostalgic feel. Think of the beautiful landscapes from Spirited Away, the cozy towns in My Neighbor Totoro, or the magical worlds in Howl’s Moving Castle. Ghibli films are famous for their breathtaking visuals, and now, thanks to AI tools like ChatGPT, people can create similar art with just a few words.
When the option to generate Ghibli-style images became available, the internet exploded with excitement. Social media feeds were flooded with AI-generated artworks—fantasy villages, enchanted forests, and whimsical creatures, all resembling scenes straight out of a Ghibli movie. Artists, anime lovers, and casual users alike jumped on the trend, each trying to create their own magical world. The demand was so high that it put enormous pressure on ChatGPT’s servers, leading to unexpected downtime.
While ChatGPT chief executive Sam Altman acknowledged the craze for Ghibli style images, he revealed that the “GPUs are melting”.
“It’s super fun seeing people love images in chatgpt. but our GPUs are melting. we are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. hopefully won’t be long! chatgpt free tier will get 3 generations per day soon,” Altman said on X on March 27.
