What happens next: IPL 2025 hangs in balance amidst conflict

Must read

Shillong, May 9: With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 suspended for at least a week due to the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, attention has now shifted to what lies ahead for the remainder of the tournament.

When will IPL 2025 resume?

The BCCI has not provided a fixed date for the resumption of IPL 2025. In a press release, the board said that a new schedule for the remaining matches and venue changes—if required—will be announced “in due course.” The decision will follow a “comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders.” This includes inputs from central and state governments, security agencies, franchise owners, broadcasters, and sponsors.

How many matches are left in IPL 2025?

IPL 2025 features 70 league stage matches and four playoff games, including the final. So far, 58 league matches have been played. This includes the match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC), which was suspended midway in Dharamsala due to a sudden security threat following Pakistan’s missile and drone activity.

That leaves 12 league-stage matches and the four playoff fixtures—Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final—still to be completed.

Can the suspension be extended beyond a week?

Yes, and quite possibly. The current halt is a minimum one-week pause, and if tensions between India and Pakistan continue to escalate, the BCCI may be forced to extend the suspension indefinitely. Any further aggression, retaliation, or national emergency could push the tournament beyond its original time frame. Stakeholders are on high alert, monitoring both the border situation and public sentiment before any decision is made.

Why is finishing the IPL in May important?

The Indian cricket team is scheduled to play a five-match Test series in England beginning June 20, 2025. Given the players’ preparation time and travel requirements, the BCCI ideally wants to conclude the IPL by the end of May or at the latest, the first week of June. Delaying beyond this will not only strain player workload and logistics but could affect national commitments.

What are the alternatives if IPL cannot resume soon?

If the tournament cannot resume in May or early June, the next possible window for completing IPL 2025 is in August–September. This window could become available if India decides to postpone or cancel its scheduled tour of Bangladesh in August, which is currently under discussion. Additionally, there is uncertainty over whether the Asia Cup, planned for September 2025, will take place as scheduled. Should that tournament be deferred or called off, the BCCI may use that time to finish the IPL season.
