Kerala, Dec 16: A case of new COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 has been detected in Kerala on December 8, official sources said on Saturday.
The sample was found from a 79-year-old woman whose RT-PCR test on November 18.
According to sources, she had mild symptoms of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and had recovered from COVID-19.
At present more than 90 per cent of the COVID-19 cases in India are mild and they are under home isolation, it added.
Earlier, an Indian traveller also tested positive with JN.1 sub-variant in Singapore.
Sources also said that “No other case of JN.1 variant has been detected in India.”
Who is JN.1?
The JN.1 sub-variant was first identified in Luxembourg and ever since spreading to several countries – is a descendant of the Pirola variant (BA.2.86).
JN.1 Sub-Variant discovered in spike protein, suggesting potential for increased infectivity and immune evasion.
Global count of 3,608 cases of BA.2.86 and its sub-variants, primarily reported in Europe and North America.
