Shillong, July 26: On Kargil Vijay Diwas, the nation remembers the supreme sacrifice of the brave soldiers who fought valiantly during the Kargil War in 1999. This day serves as a reminder of their unwavering courage and dedication towards protecting our country’s sovereignty. It also honours their families, who endured immense pain and loss, standing strong as pillars of support throughout the war.
On this fateful day in 1999, Captain Jintu Gogoi made the supreme sacrifice for his motherland while fighting the Pakistani intruders in Kargil.
Captain Jintu Gogoi was a part of Operation Vijay, in which Captain Gogoi had to evict enemy soldiers from the Kala Pathar ride line near LOC. He and his team reached the top early in the morning, despite facing a heavy fire attack. Captain Gogoi was asked to surrender, but living up to the motto of his Regiment , “Yudhaya Krit Nischya (Fight With Determination)” he charged at the enemy troops with his Regimental war cry ,“Badri Vishal Lal Ki Jai (Victory to the Sons of Lord Badri Nath).”
In a daring action, Capt. Gogoi killed two soldiers, and at the same time, he was also injured during the exchange of fire. Gogoi received a full burst from a machine gun in his solar plexus, but he continued firing till he collapsed. He later succumbed to injuries, and his body was found barely 150 yards from the picket on Jubar Top.
However, the battalion launched fresh attacks and took Kalapathar. The battalion was later awarded the Battle Honour ‘Batalik’ for its exploits in Op Vijay.
Captain Gogoi was awarded the Vir Chakra
On 15 August 1999, Capt Gogoi was awarded the Vir Chakra for the courage, he displayed while leading his troops to evict the enemy from Kala Pathar in the Batalik sector.
His bravery and dedication to the mission will always be remembered, and he serves as an inspiration to future generations of soldiers. The sacrifice made by Captain Gogoi and countless others during the Kargil War highlights the unwavering commitment of our armed forces to protecting our nation’s sovereignty.
About Captain Jintu Gogoi
Captain Jintu Gogoi was born in Khumtai a small town in the Golaghat district of Assam .His father was an Indian Air force Veteran, FO(Flying Officer) Thogiram Gogoi and his mother Duluprabha Gogoi.
During 1999, his unit was deployed in the J&K area, and when the Kargil war broke out, he was recalled from leave to join his unit just 12 days after his engagement.
