Why Assam government launched massive crackdown against child marriage?

Guwahati, Sep 14: Assam government has launched a massive crackdown against child marriage in the state, and so far, over dozens of people have been arrested who were directly connected with the social evil.

The crackdown against child marriage started this year in early February after chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced to nab the persons who were involved.

“The government has taken a proactive stand in preventing child marriages to boost human development. Child marriage has a negative impact on society. We support the efforts for taking steps to stop child marriages. Now, the Assam government has been bringing a bill to ban polygamy in the state, which is a great step,” said a social activist.

Meanwhile, a final draft of the Bill to ban polygamy in Assam is being prepared.
The Assam government had formed a panel to study the feasibility of an anti-polygamy law.

The experts’ committee submitted its report to the Assam government, stating that the state’s legislature has the power to create a law to ban polygamy.

On Wednesday(Sept 13), Assam police arrested at least 15 Kazis from Hailakandi district of Assam.

The Qazis were accused of being involved in child marriages in the district.

The accused were identified as Aziruddin Laskar, Mufti Abul Hussain, Asadullah Laskar, Kaisur Ahmed, Abdul Jalal Laskar, Sarifuddin Barbhuiya, Farizuddin Laskar, Saidul Haque, Nurul Haque Laskar, and Abdul Salam Barbhuiya.

According to the police, ten Kabulnamas (marriage certificates) were also seized from the accused Qazis.

The accused were detained based on the announcement by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma against child marriages in the state.

Speaking to media persons, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “In the next 10 days, around 3000 persons will be arrested for involvement in child marriages”.

Earlier this year, the Assam police arrested around 5,000 people for involvement in child marriages.

“The crackdown will continue. Earlier, this year, we have arrested many persons including priests and Kazis in connection with child marriages. Child marriage is a social evil and have a disastrous effects in the society,” said a police official.
