Wildlife sniffer dogs take the spotlight in Republic Day celebrations at Kaziranga

Marking the 76th Republic Day, a unique three-day event from January 26th to 28th, 2025, unfolded at Bagori Range in Kaziranga National Park. This celebration of unity and conservation was jointly hosted by the Assam Forest Department (Kaziranga National Park Management) and the K9 Unit of Aaranyak Foundation, with Wildlife Sniffer Dogs playing the starring role in combating wildlife crime and safeguarding endangered species.

Event Highlights
Day 1: Republic Day Parade
The festivities began with a Wildlife Sniffer Dog Parade, a unique tribute to the Republic Day spirit of unity and commitment.

March-Past: Dog squads from the Aaranyak Foundation and the Forest Department marched in a symbolic display of dedication to protecting wildlife.

Skill Demonstrations:
Obedience Showcase: K9 Agni (handled by Kartik Thevar) and K9 Reni (handled by Shailendra) demonstrated impeccable training.

Bitework: A thrilling demonstration by K9 Agni and trainer Kartik Thevar highlighted how trained dogs can apprehend poachers.

Day 2: Medical Camp
Ensuring the well-being of these canine heroes was a priority.

Comprehensive health check-ups for sniffer dogs were conducted.
A field first-aid workshop for handlers equipped them with skills to manage injuries and provide immediate care in challenging terrains.

Day 3: Training Workshop
The event concluded with an intensive training workshop led by Conservation Dog Trainer Kartik Thevar.

Topics included advanced wildlife detection, poacher tracking, and ethical practices in conservation dog training.

Practical sessions covered identifying traps, detecting contraband, and preserving evidence, arming handlers with crucial skills for field operations.
