Williamnagar, April 24: The much-awaited Williamnagar Open Futsal Tournament kicked-off at the Rongrenggre Playground on Thursday with intense matches.
A total of 32 teams are taking part in the competition. Eight matches were played on the opening day, thrilling Williamnagar spectators with closely fought contests. The final will be held on April 28 at the same venue.
The sporting event is being organized by East Garo Hills District Sports Officer in collaboration with the District Sports Promotion Society.
The opening ceremony was graced by retired Deputy Director of Sports & Youth Affairs, Jasper P. Marak, who officially declared the tournament open. Welcoming the players and guests, District Sports Officer, Babira G. Momin, explained that the event aims to provide a platform for the youth of Garo Hills.
Expressing delight at being part of the tournament, chief guest Jasper Marak said futsal is a FIFA recognised sport with its own unique appeal and is gaining popularity across India, including Meghalaya. He voiced the hope that dedicated futsal grounds will soon be built in the state.

He also reminded the gathering that Meghalaya will host the National Games in 2027. He urged young athletes to work hard and strive to represent the state at the event.
