Dibrugarh, Dec 3: The lush landscapes of Pangin, Arunachal Pradesh, transformed into a vibrant haven for nature enthusiasts during the Siang Butterfly Watch, which concluded on Sunday. The four-day spectacle, a highlight of the Siang Eco Adventure Festival 2024, celebrated the discovery of an astounding 96 butterfly species, reaffirming the region’s rich biodiversity.
Participants from across India, spanning states like Karnataka, Delhi, Kerala, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, joined international nature lovers from places as far as Tanzania, all eager to explore Siang’s natural treasures. Among the documented species were rare finds like the Singleton and Myanmar Quaker, alongside stunning varieties such as the Common Peacock, Paris Peacock, and Common Onyx.
Johnstone Lumenyera from Tanzania remarked, “The sheer diversity here is eye-opening. This event reminds us that conservation is a global responsibility, and it’s inspiring to see such efforts in action.”
Tajom Tatin, organising secretary, emphasized the broader vision: “This success marks Siang as a vital butterfly habitat. We’re eager to transform this momentum into conservation strategies and eco-tourism, benefiting both biodiversity and local communities.”
With its fluttering wings of change, Siang is poised to become India’s next hotspot for butterfly tourism and conservation efforts.
