With twinkling lights and timeless traditions, Shillong lights up in Christmas spirit

Must read

Shillong, Dec 20: Oh, it is the most beautiful time of the year as Shillong transforms into a magical wonderland, preparing to welcome Christmas—the birth of Lord Jesus—with open arms.

From the bustling lanes of Police Bazaar to the quiet neighbourhoods, the city is draped in beautiful decorations and twinkling lights, with every corner glowing warmly in the festive spirit.

Government offices, homes and shops proudly display Christmas stars, their gentle glow casting a cozy warmth over the chilly December evenings. Meanwhile, All Saints Church and the Cathedral in Laitumkhrah are adorned with wreaths and nativity scenes, as the sound of carols drifts through the air, spreading joy and togetherness.

With just five days to go until Christmas, families can be seen rushing to shops for new clothes and shoes to wear on the big day – December 25.

The bustling crowds at Khyndailad often result in hours of standstill traffic, leaving anyone arriving there hoping for a stroke of luck to secure a parking spot. Nonetheless, all this chaos only adds to the excitement and anticipation of Christmas.

Lines form outside bakeries as groups of eager customers wait to grab Christmas cakes and cookies. After all, no Christmas table is complete without these festive treats!

The Christmas spirit is not confined to Khyndailad and Police Bazaar alone; Ïewduh too is bustling with thousands of Christmas shoppers. The demand for local delicacies like Syiar Khasi (local chicken), Tungrymbai (fermented beans), Putharo and Pudoh (local foods) is soaring. While Khyndailad offers glitz and glamor, many still hold a soft spot for local eateries only available at Ïewduh and no Christmas is complete without at least one cake from one of the oldest shops in Motphran – “U Cake na Mahari.”

In Meghalaya, particularly Shillong, Christmas is more than just a Christian festival. It is a celebration embraced by people of all faiths—Hindu, Muslim, Parsi, Jain, and Sikh alike—showcasing the city’s unity and love for the season.

As it has done for years, Shillong, with its unique charm, knows how to celebrate Christmas, drawing visitors from near and far to spend the holidays in the city with their loved ones.

Shillong is not just preparing for a holiday—it is embracing the season of love, light, and togetherness with open hearts.
