Shillong, July 15: Following consistent heavy rains in the Shillong region and areas near Umiam Lake, the water level in Umiam Dam has increased to 3205.75 feet as of July 14, 2023 at 8 AM.
The water level is almost near the safe level of the reservoir, and would need to be released if the water goes beyond this level. The safe limit of the reservoir is 3220 feet of water.
With only a difference of 15 feet to the holding capacity of the Umiam Dam, the Deputy Commissioner cum Chairman of DDMA, Ri Bhoi district, has warned people living downstream of Umiam Dam to not venture near streams, drains, culverts that are fed by the water from Umiam Dam.
He said the water from the Dam can be released at any time, and being near such water bodies can be harmful for the public.
In case of flood, he also advised people to stay away from electric poles and power lines to avoid electrocution.
