Tura, March 7: In another case of man versus beast conflict in the Garo Hills region, a young mother was trampled to death by a wild elephant on Saturday in the border region of South Garo Hills district.
The attack took place at Komdok village under Gasuapara police station in the border region when the 36-year-old woman, Azily G Momin, and her 6-year-old son Anchuman G Momin was attacked by a rogue elephant that entered their village area in search of food.
The dry winter is a time when herds of elephants cross over from the plains of Bangladesh towards the Garo Hills seeking food.
The grievously injured woman and her son were rescued by villagers and rushed to Tura civil hospital. Sadly, she could not be saved. Her son is currently under medical treatment.
This is the second elephant attack in the last three months in the South Garo Hills region.
In January, a man who ventured out to his paddy field in the dead of night was trampled to death by another wild elephant in the same Gasuapara-Sibbari region of the border.
