Shillong, July 8: Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Rekha Sharma on Monday said generally the women of the north-eastern region are safer than women from other parts of the country.
Sharma is here to participate in the capacity building workshop to promote entrepreneurship of indigenous women of North East based on non-timber forest produce.
She said women in the North East are safer compared to women in the plains and North India where there are several brutal cases that are registered.
However, the NCW Chairperson said, efforts are on to make women safer in the region and in the rest of the country, so that there are zero cases of crime against women.
When she was pointed out about the rising cases of women and children in Meghalaya, Sharma said, increase in registration of such cases could be due to increased awareness.
Sharma added, with more awareness, more and more women are coming forward to register these cases and she appreciated the media in assisting in creating awareness and also the police for working tirelessly to minimise such crimes.
The NCW, she informed, on its part is conducting legal awareness programmes throughout the country through the National Legal Services Authority to create awareness among women about their legal rights.
On the issue of single mothers in the state, Sharma said, if such single mothers have taken a decision on their own then the NCW would not interfere. But, if such individuals have been forced to be a single mother only then the NCW would take action.
Regarding the workshop, Sharma said, the participants would be informed about several tailor made programmes to become entrepreneurs in non timber forest produce.
She said opportunities in herbal products, eco-tourism and also forest management are some of the opportunities that the indigenous tribal women can take advantage of to become financially independent.
