World Environment Day 2024, observed with the theme, Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience

Guwahati, June 5: World Environment Day, is celebrated annually on 5 June, with a motive to spread awareness on environmental protection. The day was initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1973, this day has grown into the largest global platform for environmental outreach, engaging millions worldwide. The 2024 celebration, hosted by Saudi Arabia, on crucial issues of land restoration, combating desertification, and enhancing drought resilience, themed by the slogan, “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”

This year’s theme revolves around the necessity of land restoration as a fundamental component of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). This global initiative aims to revive ecosystems, essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. As we cannot reverse time, the focus will be on planting forests, rejuvenating water sources, and restoring soil health, emphasizing our generation’s potential to reconcile with the land.

Adding to the significance, 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). To commemorate this milestone, the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the UNCCD will convene in Riyadh from 2 to 13 December 2024. This conference will gather global leaders and experts to deliberate on strategies and actions to halt desertification and promote land restoration.

World Environment Day is more than a celebration; it is a clarion call for the global community to recognize and address the pressing environmental challenges of our time. It is a reminder of the intrinsic connection to nature and the imperative need to safeguard it for future generations.

However, human activities have strained the environment, leading to deforestation, pollution, and climate change. World Environment Day serves as a critical reminder that we must pivot towards more sustainable practices and restore our natural world.

Various organizations marked the day by having plantation drives, to protect nature.
