World Population Day and Stop Diarrhoea Campaign launched in South West Garo Hills

Ampati, July 13: The Deputy Commissioner of South West Garo Hills, Hema Nayak, launched the World Population Day and Stop Diarrhoea Campaign at the Dinangpara SSA School playground, South West Garo Hills on Friday.

The event was organized by the District Health Society, South West Garo Hills, targeting Dinangpara and adjoining villages known for high child mortality rates and resistance to health services.

In her address, Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak emphasized the importance of child spacing and family planning services available at various health facilities. She also highlighted the prevalence of diarrhoeal deaths among children, underscoring the importance of preventive measures and timely referrals to health facilities for proper treatment. Nayak also addressed critical issues related to immunization and nutrition, urging parents to utilize locally available nutritious foods.

Other notable dignitaries in attendance included District School Education Officer In-charge, Tapos Marak, who spoke at the event, highlighting the significance of education in improving health outcomes. District Maternal and Child Health Officer Dr. Lydia Marak, I/c District Malaria Officer, addressed the gathering on the Stop Diarrhoea programme and World Population Day, along with providing insights on combating Malaria, Dengue, and Japanese Encephalitis.

The event saw participation from various departments, including the ICDS Department, Self Help Groups, and Village Health Council (VHC) members. Dr. Samson Sangma, District Immunization Officer, concluded the programme on a hopeful note, expressing the District Health Society’s commitment to the well-being of the villages.

A free health check-up camp was conducted, benefiting nearly 200 residents. A VHC meeting was also held focusing on infant mortality and maternal care which followed the campaign launch, where VHC members shared their challenges in accessing health services, which the health department pledged to address.
