Tura, Sep 10: The District Mental Health Programme, West Garo Hills, conducted a small event on Sunday (September 10) to observe World Suicide Prevention Day at DC Park in Tura.
Every year, World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10th to spread awareness about mental health.
Speaking to Hubs News, Dr. Bollen Sangma, Sr. Psychiatrist of Tura Civil Hospital, spoke about suicide prevention, the risks and symptoms of mental health, and how to detect, prevent, and deal with mental illnesses like stress, trauma, depression, etc.
“There are many cases in India alone regarding suicides committed per minute just in the 2021 census. Many factors due to which people commit suicide are financial problems, relationship problems, drug abuse, etc..,” he added.
He said there are various warning signs to look out for in a person suffering from mental illness, like depression, lack of interest or zeal, always feeling sleepy or tired or wanting to sleep for long hours, anger, etc.
“If you happen to witness any of your family members, friends, or anyone you know having such signs, then quickly advise them to visit a doctor or contact a counsellor,” he added.
He further said that if anyone knows anyone with mental issues or is going through something, don’t hesitate to contact their team. The numbers are on the Facebook page of the District Mental Health Programme.
The programme also saw a dance performance by the students of Don Bosco College, followed by a skit presentation by the students of Don Bosco College’s Boy’s Hostel.
Narbecca G. Momin, clinical psychologist; Bilrak D. Marak, psychiatric social worker; and staff of DMPH and WGH also attended the programme.
