Tura, March 22: The District Tuberculosis Centre of West Garo Hills observed World TB Day at the Asanang Multi-Facility Centre on Friday, under the global theme “Yes! We Can End TB – Commit, Invest, Deliver.” The event saw participation from students of Asanang Secondary School, teachers, Village Health Committee (VHC) members, and was graced by Chingsime N. Sangma, Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of Rongram Block, as the Chief Guest.

The programme began with an awareness session led by Dr. Riksilchi Sangma, District Tuberculosis Officer (DTO) in-charge of West Garo Hills. She delivered an informative talk on the causes, symptoms, and prevention of tuberculosis (TB), emphasizing that not everyone infected with the TB bacteria becomes sick, but pulmonary TB remains the most common form. She also advised that a person suffering from TB should cover his/her mouth while coughing or sneezing.

“If a person infected with TB does not receive treatment, they can potentially spread the disease to 10–15 others in a single year,” she said and urged attendees to spread awareness in their communities and work towards creating TB-free villages in the future.

Chief Guest Chingsime N. Sangma spoke on the significance of a nutritious diet in fighting TB. She said a well-balanced diet boosts the immune system and is crucial in both preventing and recovering from TB. She also stressed on the importance of collective action, stating that ending TB is not the responsibility of the medical community alone. She asserted that every individual has a role to play in spreading awareness on TB—from schools and colleges to every corner of society.
