World TB Day observed at District TB Hospital with a call for action

Tura, March 27: World Tuberculosis (TB) Day was observed at the District TB Hospital with the theme “Yes! We Can End TB – Commit, Invest, Deliver.” The event aimed to raise awareness about TB, its prevention and the need for collective efforts to eliminate the disease.

The programme was hosted by Newtone Ch. Sangma, TB Health Visitor (TB-HV), and featured an informative session by Dr. Riksilchi Sangma, who elaborated on the causes, symptoms, and prevention of TB. She also highlighted key government initiatives like:
•Nikshay Poshan Yojana (NPY): A scheme under which TB patients receive ₹1,000 per month as financial assistance from the Government of India.
•Nikshay Mitra: A support initiative where individuals, NGOs, cooperative societies, faith-based organizations, and political parties can provide aid to TB patients.

A moving testimony was shared by TB Champion Himprey T. Sangma, who spoke about his personal journey of overcoming the disease.

Expert Insights on TB & HIV Correlation

The Guest of Honour, Dr. Rajamony R. Marak, Nodal Officer of the ART Centre, Tura Civil Hospital, addressed the link between HIV and TB, emphasizing that HIV weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to TB.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Jakrambal Sangma, DM&HO, West Garo Hills, provided a historical perspective on TB, explaining its evolution and the discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. She stressed that India aims to eliminate TB by 2025, while the global target is 2030, underscoring the importance of public cooperation in achieving this goal.

Recognizing Excellence & Patient Support

The event also honored the best-performing Health & Wellness Centres (HWC) for their efforts in TB care and treatment:
1.Damalgre HWC
2.Waram Songma HWC
3.Damal Asim HWC
4.Wajadagre HWC
5.Tarapara HWC

Additionally, nutritional kits were distributed to TB patients under the Comprehensive TB Care (CTBC) initiative.
